The Cornell 7 _ The Coast of Silence
The Cornell 7_ The cost of silence
What Does Your Silence Say?
When you witness something you know is wrong, what does your silence say?
The story surrounding a young woman and horrific allegations involving members of a fraternity and a group chat has raised difficult questions.
These are allegations, and an investigation is ongoing.
But the bigger conversation is about us, what do you do when you are in a room, a group chat, an office, or among friends, and something happens that violates basic human decency and dignity?
Do you speak up?Or do you tell yourself, “It’s none of my business”?
We talk a lot about integrity, but integrity is also about what you refuse to silently tolerate.
Speaking up doesnt always mean making a dramatic statement it can mean asking a question, interrupting harmful behavior, or saying, “This is not okay.”
It can mean reporting something that needs to be investigated.
Silence can feel neutral when youre not actively participating, but silence can have consequences, too.
So ask yourself:Who are you when speaking up may cost you something?
Because our values are tested when living by them requires courage.Today, dont just know your values but have the courage to live them.
